· Check for leaks often. o Do a visual inspection of all pipes, toilets and faucets. o Listen for leaks when no water is being used. o Check your water meter when no water is being used. Take a meter reading when the water is not in use and take the reading again several hours later (or overnight – before anyone uses the water). The reading should be the same. If the readings are not the same – there is a leak somewhere in the building. o Always fix leaks as soon as they are discovered.
· Saving water in the kitchen: o Don’t cool water by running the tap. Store drinking water in the refrigerator. o Wash dishes in a dishpan instead of under running water. o Don’t run water while you are rinsing dishes. Turn water on to rinse a dish – then turn water off. o Run the dishwasher only when it’s full. o Don’t thaw frozen food by running water. Thaw in the refrigerator or microwave. o Wash vegetables in a bowl of water – not under running water.
· Saving water in the bathroom: o Turn the water off when you brush your teeth or shave. Turn it back on to rinse. o Keep showers short. o Don’t run water constantly during the shower. Turn water off when soaping up – then turn it back on to rinse. o Take shallow baths. o Install water-efficient shower heads including heads that allow you to turn water off and on during the shower. o Flush the toilet only when necessary. o Don’t flush tissues or other trash down the toilet.
· Saving water outside o Water your lawn as little as possible. o Water when it’s cool to help reduce evaporation. o Use mulch to help limit watering. o Always use a hose nozzle that allows you to shut off water. o Be sure to shut off your hose faucet when finished watering. o Recycle rain water. Collect rain water in containers and use to water plants.
· Other Tips to save water: o Purchase newer energy efficient appliances. o Wash only full loads of laundry. What are some ways to save water?
