Roof drain, cellar drain, sump pump or storm drain violations
A reminder to all Bradford sewer users regarding roof drains, cellar drains, sump pumps or storm drains:
Per the Bradford sewer ordinance, “no person shall make connections of roof downspouts, exterior or interior foundation drains, areaway drains or other sources of surface runoff or groundwater to a building sewer or building drain which in turn is connected directly or indirectly to the Bradford sewer system”.
Water from roof and cellar drains, sump pumps and storm drains deliver unwanted wastewater to the Bradford treatment facility. The treatment of unwanted ground and surface water increases our costs to all sewer users.
A one-inch rainstorm can result in a 100 foot by 100 foot flat roof delivering over 6,000 gallons of water into the building’s drain system. If this water enters into the sewer drains, it not only adds costs to treat this unwanted water, it also disrupts the disinfection process.
If you have a roof drain, cellar drain, sump pump or storm drain that runs into the Bradford sewer system, it must be redirected so that it does not run into the Bradford sewer system. If you know of a violation of this ordinance, please be sure to contact the Bradford Water & Sewer Commission.
Personnel from the Bradford Water & Sewer Commission make periodic inspections to businesses and homes to detect these violations. They also conduct periodic smoke tests.
If you have questions on this ordinance, please contact the Bradford Water & Sewer Commission at 802-222-4315.
The Commissioners meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. in the Water office of the Bradford Academy Building.
